Esperanza Cordero moves with her family to a small red house on Mango Street in a working-class Latino neighborhood of Chicago. The house disappoints her with its crumbling bricks and cramped rooms, far from the dream home her parents promised. As she grows from child to teenager, Esperanza observes the women around her who seem trapped by poverty, abusive relationships, and limited opportunities. She watches her neighbor Sally, who escapes her violent father only to marry young and disappear behind another man's restrictions. Esperanza befriends Rachel and Lucy, explores the neighborhood's stories, and begins writing as a way to make sense of her world. She struggles between loyalty to her community and her desire to escape the cycles of limitation she sees repeated in the lives of the women around her. Through a series of connected moments and encounters, Esperanza discovers that her path forward requires both leaving Mango Street and promising to return for those who cannot follow.
