Genie Lo has her hands full as California's Heaven-appointed Guardian. She protects yaoguai and spirits across the state while trying to maintain her academic life. Her college visit gets interrupted by news of a dangerous force threatening the cosmos from an alternate dimension. The Jade Emperor should handle this crisis, but he has disappeared completely. Genie decides to fix the broken system herself. She assembles a team of bickering Chinese gods and embarks on a quest across multiple reality planes. Her boyfriend Quentin Sun Wukong and the goddess Guanyin offer support, but Genie carries the real burden. As the universe-ending threat grows stronger, she discovers that raw power cannot solve this problem. Victory will demand something much harder to give.
