The Ladies Hall

by Vanessa Miller

First published 2026

Mary and Anna arrive at Oberlin College in the 1880s to pursue the Bachelor of Arts program, known as the "gentlemen's course." Mary comes from wealth and attended presidential inaugurations with her father. Anna works as a schoolteacher and holds a second job to afford her room and board. She is likely the daughter of her enslaved mother's former owner. Despite their different backgrounds, both women share ambition and a desire for change. They face classmates who refuse to accept women, especially Black women, in their program. The college officially admits students regardless of race or gender, but policies cannot change hearts. Mary and Anna must constantly prove themselves worthy of their place. They endure obstacles and pain while the world changes around them. If they can overcome their differences and work together, they might create something lasting. Their determination drives them forward as they build a legacy of success and excellence despite the resistance they encounter.
