Danny North lives in an isolated mountain house in western Virginia with dozens of magical relatives. His cousins master the family arts, creating beings that ordinary people mistake for fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, and werewolves. Danny watches them develop these talents while he remains powerless, unable to form an outself like the others. His father rules the sprawling household with strict laws. The family maintains a secret library filled with foreign texts that Danny must learn to read, though he cannot access the magic within them. His relatives practice their abilities freely but must hide them from the outside world. The North family keeps many secrets from outsiders, but they also conceal crucial truths from Danny himself. These hidden facts will soon shatter the careful isolation the family has maintained for generations.
