The Lost Library

by Rebecca Stead

First published 2023

Evan discovers a small free library that appears overnight in Martinville, watched over by a large orange cat. When he takes two worn books from its shelves, he sets something in motion that will change everything. Evan and his best friend Rafe notice connections between one book and an old event that adults refuse to discuss. Their questions lead them deeper into mysteries that could reshape their futures and their entire town. The story unfolds through three voices: Evan himself, a ghost librarian named Al, and Mortimer, the aging cat who guards the library. As the boys dig for answers, they must decide what truths are worth uncovering and what kind of lives they want to build. The mystery forces them to confront the power that books and librarians hold over our destinies.
