First published 1999

Doc Ford receives a desperate call from the daughter of a fallen war buddy. Her mother has vanished somewhere in Mexico, traveling with a questionable man who has also made off with her money. The missing woman's late husband had told his daughter that Ford was the one person she could trust in real trouble. Ford agrees to help and heads south to Baja California to pick up the trail. What he discovers is a man more truly malevolent than any adversary he has previously faced. The case grows more complex when Ford realizes a third party lurks in the shadows, leaving death wherever he goes. Each clue Ford uncovers only draws him deeper into danger. The mystery becomes a deadly puzzle where finding the solution may prove the most hazardous challenge of all.
