The Miles Between

by Mary E. Pearson

First published 2009

Destiny Faraday has built walls around herself at Hedgebrook Academy. She follows one cardinal rule: never form attachments to her classmates. When an available car presents an opportunity, Destiny joins three fellow students on an impromptu journey without permission. Her companions seek what they call "one fair day" in the town of Langdon, hoping to find a place where justice prevails and good triumphs over evil. They expect nothing more than simple enjoyment and escape from their routine. Destiny carries a burden her traveling companions cannot imagine. She harbors knowledge about Langdon that she has kept locked away from everyone. The town represents far more than a destination for adventure. As their vehicle carries them toward this mysterious place, Destiny must confront whether maintaining her emotional distance will protect her or prevent her from discovering something transformative about herself and the world around her.
