Baucis and Philemon live in poverty but share what little they have. When two beggars arrive at their cottage door, the elderly couple invites them inside to rest and eat. The strangers ask for their bowls to be filled again and again. Baucis and Philemon grow distressed as they pour from their pitcher, knowing it holds barely enough for one serving. They feel shame at their inability to properly host their guests. But the beggars reveal something impossible: the pitcher refills itself with each pour.
