Hercule Poirot lies bedridden with influenza when a nephew arrives seeking help. Someone has killed the man's uncle at a remote hunting lodge. The Belgian detective cannot leave his London rooms, so he assigns the case to his loyal companion Arthur Hastings. Hastings must travel to the lodge alone and piece together the crime without his mentor's guidance. The murder presents itself as a puzzle rather than a straightforward killing. Hastings faces the challenge of thinking like Poirot while relying on his own detective instincts. The case tests whether the faithful assistant has absorbed enough of his friend's methods to solve a mystery independently. Hastings discovers that proving his abilities means confronting his own limitations as an investigator.
