Eric stays silent most of the time. When words need saying, his imaginary companion the Night Shimmy handles the talking. This arrangement works fine until Eric encounters Marcia, a girl who accepts his quiet nature without question. She doesn't push him to speak or act like something is wrong with him. As their friendship grows, Eric realizes he can communicate without depending on his invisible helper. The Night Shimmy becomes less necessary as Eric finds his own voice through this new relationship. The story follows Eric's journey from relying on fantasy to embracing real connection with another person who understands him.
