Arcturus works in the stables when magic changes everything. The young man accidentally calls forth a demon, making him the first commoner in the Hominum Empire who can summon. This ability threatens the established order that keeps magical power in the hands of nobles alone. The overlords cannot let word spread that common blood can wield such forces. They send Arcturus to Vocans Academy under the pretense of training. In reality, they want him contained and watched. At the academy, Arcturus faces hostility from students who see him as beneath their station. He struggles to master abilities he never asked for while navigating the dangerous politics of magical education. The empire fractures around him. Common people grow restless under noble rule, and rebellion stirs in the streets. War threatens to tear Hominum apart. Arcturus finds himself caught between worlds. He shares blood with the rebels but now possesses the magic of their oppressors. He must decide whether to use his newfound power to support the empire that enslaved his people or join the uprising that could destroy everything he has learned to value.
