In these sharply observed tales, Chekhov captures the small tragedies and quiet joys of ordinary people. From a schoolmaster hosting an annual dinner to a doctor grappling with his own mortality, his characters confront the absurdities and disappointments of their lives with a mixture of resignation and resilience. Chekhov's precise, unsentimental prose lays bare the hidden emotional lives of his subjects, revealing the universal truths that lie beneath the surface of even the most mundane experiences.
