The Shadow over Innsmouth

by H.P. Lovecraft

First published 1936

Robert Olmstead arrives in the decaying coastal town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts, drawn by rumors of cheap lodging and local history. The townspeople watch him with suspicious eyes and speak in hushed whispers about their fishing industry and old traditions. As Olmstead explores the rotting wharves and crumbling buildings, he learns that Innsmouth's prosperity once depended on a pact with creatures from the ocean depths. The residents worship Dagon and Great Cthulhu, ancient gods that demand devotion in exchange for gold and abundant catches. Olmstead discovers that many townspeople are hybrids, part human and part fish-like being, products of unions between locals and the Deep Ones who rise from underwater cities. As night falls, these amphibious creatures emerge from the sea to walk among their human relatives. Olmstead realizes he cannot escape Innsmouth unchanged, and his own family history becomes terrifyingly clear.
