DCI Nelson opens his mail to find another threatening letter. The words feel familiar, eerily similar to correspondence that once led him to forensic archaeologist Dr Ruth Galloway during the Crossing Places investigation. But the person who wrote those original letters died years ago. Someone is reaching into Nelson's past, using knowledge only the dead should possess. Ruth returns to the windswept landscape of north Norfolk as she and Nelson confront this impossible mystery. The letters draw them back into old wounds and forgotten dangers. Someone wants to finish what was started long ago, and Ruth and Nelson must discover who before the past claims them both. The familiar becomes sinister as they realize their previous case may not be as closed as they believed.
