The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Stories

by Robert Louis Stevenson

First published 1886

Henry Jekyll works late in his laboratory, mixing chemicals that he believes will separate good from evil in human nature. The young scientist drinks his experimental potion, hoping to eliminate the dark impulses that plague mankind. The formula works, but not as Jekyll intended. Instead of purifying his soul, the mixture transforms him into Edward Hyde, a creature of pure malevolence who commits increasingly violent acts under cover of darkness. Jekyll finds himself trapped between two identities, unable to control when the transformation occurs. As Hyde's crimes escalate, Jekyll realizes his noble experiment has unleashed something far worse than the ordinary human wickedness he sought to cure. The collection includes additional tales of moral corruption and supernatural terror, each exploring the thin line between civilization and savagery that runs through every human heart.
