The Submarine Plans

by Agatha Christie

Part of Hercule Poirot, book 0.08

First published 2013

Hercule Poirot receives an urgent summons late one evening. The blueprints for England's newest submarine have vanished from the home of Lord Alloway, a man with ambitions to become Prime Minister. The theft puts national security at risk and demands immediate action. Poirot arrives to find chaos. Each witness tells a different story about what happened. Some claim an intruder broke into the house and grabbed the documents. Others suspect someone from Lord Alloway's own household. The possibility remains that a guest at the house committed the crime. The detective must sort through conflicting testimonies to discover the truth. Did a stranger penetrate the house's defenses, or does the thief live much closer to home? Poirot faces the challenge of determining which witnesses can be trusted and which are lying. The case tests his ability to see past deception and identify the real culprit among a group of suspects who all had access to the stolen plans.
