Two Mississippi Bureau of Investigation detectives arrive in Money, Mississippi to examine a string of vicious killings. At each murder site, they find something impossible: the body of a man who looks exactly like Emmett Till. The local sheriff blocks their work. His deputy stonewalls them. The coroner refuses to cooperate. White residents meet their questions with hostility and slurs. The detectives begin to suspect they are witnessing acts of vengeance. Soon they learn that identical murders are happening across the entire country in quick succession. Someone or something is settling old scores. The buried past has clawed its way back to the surface. The detectives must solve cases that challenge everything they understand about justice, history, and the price of racial violence in America.
