First published 2023

A construction crane crashes in New York City, crushing buildings and killing innocent people. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs arrive at the scene to investigate what appears to be deliberate sabotage. A political group takes responsibility for the collapse and delivers an ultimatum: meet their demands within twenty-four hours or watch another crane fall. Panic spreads through the city as residents fear more deadly collapses. Rhyme and his team race against time to decode the plot and prevent further destruction. The investigation takes a personal turn when Rhyme discovers the true architect of the terror campaign. His old adversary the Watchmaker has returned, turning the city's own infrastructure into weapons of mass destruction. With each passing hour, the threat grows more urgent and the body count threatens to rise.
