Mia Tang arrives in San Francisco for winter break journalism camp at the Tribune. She brings her mother, best friend Lupe, Jason, and Hank along to visit family and explore Chinatown. At camp, Mia feels overwhelmed by older students who carry expensive gear and boast about connections to famous journalists. She has only a pen and her determination to tell stories.
