Tom escapes his whaling ship and flees into the mountains of a Pacific island with his companion Toby. They stumble into the valley of the Typee, a tribe rumored to be cannibals. The natives welcome Tom with unexpected kindness, feeding him breadfruit and tending his injured leg. A beautiful young woman named Fayaway becomes his constant companion, and he finds himself drawn into their daily rituals and customs. Yet Tom remains a captive in paradise. He cannot leave the valley, and the question of whether his hosts practice cannibalism haunts him. As weeks pass, Tom grows increasingly desperate to escape, torn between his attraction to this sensual island life and his fear of what the Typees might ultimately do to him.
