Part of Vaim
First published 2027
The editor of Vaim Vekeblad has a plan. In a town where almost nothing happens, he has decided to fill his newspaper with illustrated memorial tributes, lavish remembrances of the dead printed alongside drawings or photographs. It sounds straightforward. It is not. The living residents of Vaim are hard to reach, reluctant to talk, slow to open their doors. Every attempt to gather a quote or confirm a detail runs into the same wall: people in Vaim keep to themselves. The editor pushes forward anyway, chasing down names, knocking on doors, piecing together lives from scraps. What accumulates is not just a collection of obituaries but a portrait of a community that would rather not be seen. The tension sits quietly between what the editor wants to record and what the town refuses to give up. Fosse builds the whole thing from small resistances and small defeats, and the emotional weight arrives late, in the gap between the ambition of the project and the silence that keeps answering back.
