Cass Raines left the Chicago police force behind to work as a private investigator. Her former partner Ben Mickerson calls in a favor. He needs backup protecting Vonda Allen, the powerful publisher behind a successful vanity magazine. Someone has been sending Vonda flowers with death threats. Cass reluctantly agrees to help, though she has little patience for celebrity clients with diva reputations. The job turns dangerous when two of Vonda's staff members turn up murdered. Vonda refuses to explain who might want her dead or why. During a book tour appearance, a mysterious fan approaches with flowers and slashes Ben with a knife, leaving him fighting for his life in the hospital. Now Cass must work alone to uncover Vonda's secrets and identify her would-be killer. She faces enemies both outside and within the Chicago Police Department who want to stop her investigation. Cass discovers that protecting Vonda means confronting the darker side of wealth and power in the Windy City.
