Captain Paul Waggett commands the Home Guard on a remote Scottish island where whisky has become scarce during World War II. When a cargo ship loaded with thousands of cases of whisky runs aground near the shore, the islanders see their chance. Led by the resourceful Macroon and others, they begin secretly salvaging the precious cargo under cover of darkness. Waggett tries to stop what he sees as theft, but the islanders know the whisky rightfully belongs to anyone bold enough to claim it. The conflict escalates as Waggett calls in authorities while the locals work frantically to hide their bounty. The battle becomes one between rigid military duty and island survival, between following rules and seizing opportunity when it washes ashore.
