Ysmirao and the Pearl of Time

by Jason Ellis

First published 2008

Amelia Maylock and her companions creep up a riverbank, using tree trunks for cover as they approach their target. Shadows become their allies as they move in silence toward the metal cave entrances ahead. Maratlus has stationed guards throughout the area, and Amelia recognizes some of the creatures from her combat training with the old woman who conjured attackers for practice. These hybrids are Erryaz's creations, born from dark magic that fused humans with wolves and dogs. The sentries stand upright on two legs but possess fur, elongated snouts, and razor sharp teeth. Heavily armed and vigilant, they sweep their heads back and forth in mechanical patterns. Amelia must draw on everything she learned during her training sessions to navigate past these dangerous watchers and reach whatever lies within the fortified caves.
