Part of La Comédie Humaine
First published 2002
Z. Marcas lives in poverty in a cramped student room, his dreams of political influence crushed. Once ambitious in politics and journalism, he now survives by tutoring two poor, disillusioned students. Marcas shares his dark vision of France with his pupils: a nation sliding toward ruin, where greedy opportunists control the young generation. He describes a society ruled by oligarchs who worship money above all else, suffocating any hope for genuine progress. The students listen as their teacher explains how the system blocks meaningful political action. Yet Marcas believes one path remains open when conventional politics fails. Revolution might still be possible. Through his teachings, Marcas reveals the brutal realities of power and the price of idealism in a corrupt world.
