A Christmas Carol

by H. D. Greaves

First published 2021

Ebenezer Scrooge sits alone in his counting house on Christmas Eve, cold and bitter. The miserly old man despises Christmas and refuses his nephew's dinner invitation. He pays his clerk Bob Cratchit poorly and dismisses charity collectors with contempt. That night, the ghost of his dead business partner Jacob Marley appears in chains, warning Scrooge of his fate unless he changes his ways. Three spirits visit Scrooge through the night. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows him his lonely childhood and lost love. The Ghost of Christmas Present reveals the joy he misses, including the Cratchit family's humble celebration and his nephew's Christmas gathering. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come displays a future where Scrooge dies unmourned and forgotten. These supernatural encounters force Scrooge to confront the emptiness of his existence and the pain his selfishness causes others. The story explores whether a man can truly transform his heart and find redemption through compassion and generosity.
