Hermia loves Lysander, but her father demands she marry Demetrius. When the young couple escapes into the woods at night, Demetrius chases after them, followed by Helena who pines hopelessly for Demetrius. The forest belongs to quarreling fairy royalty Oberon and Titania, locked in conflict over a servant boy. Oberon sends his sprite Puck to fetch a magical flower that makes anyone fall in love with the first creature they see upon waking. Puck delights in the chaos, accidentally enchanting the wrong lover and transforming Bottom the weaver into a donkey-headed monster who becomes Titania's temporary beloved. As the laborers rehearse their wedding play and the lovers stumble through mistaken affections, the night spirals into delicious confusion. The magic reveals the absurdity of desire itself.
