A New New Me

by Helen Oyeyemi

First published 2025

Kinga divides her existence among seven distinct selves. Each version takes control for designated periods. Kinga A begins every Monday by removing food delivery apps and promoting wellness routines. Kinga E concludes Fridays soaking in wine and bathwater until her fingers prune. The collective works multiple jobs spanning matchmaking, perfume creation, and window washing. Their personalities span from indifferent to furious, withdrawn to controlling. At least three gravitate toward destructive romances. This system demands endless planning, creates bitter conflicts, and requires constant deception. Then Kinga A discovers a bound man in their shared apartment. The other six versions deny any knowledge of him. This shocking find compels all seven personalities to confront a terrifying truth: one among them seeks to eliminate the rest. The arrangement that once helped Kinga survive now threatens to tear her apart.
