Among a Thousand Fireflies

by Helen Frost

First published 2019

A firefly settles on a flower as evening arrives and stars appear overhead. Around her, lights begin to blink. One flash, then three, then seven. Soon hundreds and thousands of fireflies fill the summer air with their signals. She must find one specific flash among all these lights. Her challenge grows as more fireflies join the display. She flashes her own light, hoping he will notice her signal in return. The question remains whether two fireflies can discover each other when surrounded by so many others doing exactly the same thing. This story follows their search through the magical evening as they try to connect across the crowded sky.
