Dusty prefers books to people in her Adirondack town of Black River. The seventeen-year-old finds comfort in reading and hiking the surrounding wilderness. Then animals start dying brutal deaths in the night. Dusty wakes one morning with dirt caked on her feet and a hunger she cannot name. Her body changes in ways she cannot understand or control. When Will arrives as the new student, Dusty feels drawn to him with dangerous intensity. She craves him, or maybe she craves his blood. Dusty realizes she needs help understanding what she has become. She turns to Eli Blake, whose good looks annoy her but who seems to share her transformation. Together they investigate the mystery spreading through their town. Other people are changing too. Dusty and Eli must discover whether they have become vampires or something else entirely. Their new appetites grow stronger each day.
