Part of Alex McKnight, book 5
First published 2003
Fire leaves behind charred wreckage and a smell that never fades. Alex McKnight knows this truth well. When his Ojibwa friend Vinnie LeBlanc asks for help, Alex cannot refuse. Vinnie's brother works as a hunting guide in northern Ontario, taking wealthy clients from downstate into the wild. The brother and his latest group of hunters have disappeared without a trace. Vinnie fears the worst and needs Alex to help track them down. The two men drive north into unfamiliar territory. What begins as a search and rescue mission quickly turns dangerous. Alex and Vinnie find themselves trapped deep in the Canadian wilderness. They have no food, no weapons, and no clear path home. Someone wants to keep them from returning alive. The forest that seemed vast and empty now feels full of threats. Alex must use every skill he has learned to survive and protect his friend.
