Elizabeth Chapman is walking in the city when an armed robber steps into her path. Before she can react, a massive Kodiak bear charges in and drives the man off. Then the bear shifts into a very large, very naked human male named Ronan. The situation gets worse fast: the robber turns out to be the brother of a violent criminal, and now Elizabeth is marked for retaliation. Ronan brings her to Shiftertown, where she is safer but not free. She watches him move through the community, quietly looking after other Shifters who have no one else. Elizabeth grew up in foster care, and that kind of steady protectiveness is not something she takes lightly. Ronan agrees to let her leave Shiftertown only if he stays at her side around the clock as her personal bodyguard. Elizabeth pushes back against the arrangement even as she accepts it. What she does not expect is the effect she is having on Ronan. Something in her is waking up instincts he has kept locked down for years, and the mateless bear who built his life around protecting others is starting to want something for himself.
