Kim Fraser is a district attorney who takes cases other lawyers avoid. Her newest client is a Shifter, a member of a population the human world treats as barely tolerable: collared, confined to designated neighborhoods, and regarded as dangerous animals even when they walk on two legs. Kim needs to go into Shifter Town to build her defense, and that means dealing with Shifters on their own ground and their own terms. What she finds there does not match what she was told to expect. The Shifters have their own codes, their own loyalties, and their own pride. Liam Morrissey, the Shifter she keeps running into, is not the threat she prepared for. He is something more complicated than that. The tension at the center of this story is not just legal. Kim has spent her career working inside a system that has already decided what Shifters are. The longer she stays in Shifter Town, the harder it becomes to hold that official story together. What she risks is not only her case but her certainty about which side of the line she stands on.
