Snow falls as Assistant State Pathologist arrives with her black medical bag. Inspector Benedict Devlin watches from beside the river as she examines the body of Angela Cashell, a local teenager found dead in the Borderlands between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Only two clues remain: a gold ring on her finger and an old photograph left at the scene. Devlin begins his investigation while Angela's father pursues his own violent justice. An old lover returns to complicate Devlin's personal life. When a second teenager dies, Devlin discovers connections to a prostitute's disappearance from twenty-five years before. He suspects one of his own colleagues played a role in that earlier case. The snowstorm intensifies, blurring the line between North and South. Devlin finds the boundaries between right and wrong, justice and revenge, law and crime growing equally uncertain.
