Dulcie's Taste of Magic

by Gail Herman

First published 2008

Dulcie's kitchen skills have been slipping lately. The hardworking baking fairy makes such a mess of breakfast that Queen Clarion orders her to take time off. Dulcie finds herself with nothing to do while her friends stay busy with their own fairy duties. Making matters worse, Ginger arrives as the new baking fairy and immediately takes charge of Dulcie's beloved kitchen. Dulcie feels completely displaced from the work she loves most. During her unwanted free time, she wanders into the library and discovers something unexpected. Hidden among the old books sits an ancient recipe for something called Comfort Cake. The magical instructions intrigue Dulcie, and she becomes determined to try baking this mysterious dessert. But Ginger has banned her from the kitchen entirely. Dulcie must find a way to create the Comfort Cake without access to her usual workspace. Her quest to bake this special recipe becomes about more than just following instructions. Dulcie needs to prove to herself and others that she still belongs in the kitchen she calls home.
