Lacey Lancaster retreats to her San Francisco apartment after a difficult divorce, seeking quiet time with her Abyssinian cat Cleo. Her neighbor Jack Walker shatters that peace. He argues constantly with his girlfriend about moving in together, and his cat Dog persistently pursues Cleo despite Lacey's efforts to keep them apart. When Cleo becomes pregnant with Dog's kittens, Lacey confronts Jack, expecting him to share her anger about the situation. Instead, she discovers that Jack's supposed girlfriend is actually his sister, and Jack himself has been hoping to get closer to Lacey. As the truth about Jack's feelings emerges, Lacey must decide whether she's ready to risk her heart again. The story explores whether two people can find love when their cats have already decided the matter for them.
