Astronomer Stephanie Bronson spots what she thinks is a distant supernova. The dot of light turns out to be something far more alarming: an alien vessel over a thousand miles across, traveling toward the Sun at nearly one third light speed from the constellation Lupus. Earth names the massive ship Fenrir after the Norse wolf that devours worlds. The alien craft slows as it approaches, but ignores all attempts at communication from Earth. Then disaster strikes. Fenrir's drive systems fail, sending the enormous vessel spinning helplessly toward destruction inside Venus's orbit. Bronson sees one slim chance to save the stranded aliens aboard the dying ship. She leads the rescue vessel Carpathia on a desperate mission to reach the survivors before Fenrir plunges into the Sun. But forces on Earth work to stop her rescue attempt. As Bronson races against time and opposition, she discovers that the fate of both species hangs in the balance.
