Gloriana; or, The Unfulfill'd Queen

by Michael Moorcock

First published 2013

Queen Gloriana inherits the throne of Albion after her corrupt father King Hern dies. She transforms the empire into a prosperous golden age, but her royal duties trap her in a prison of responsibility. Despite trying every possible fetish and sexual practice, she remains unable to achieve satisfaction. Her personal frustration mirrors the deeper rot within her court. While Gloriana presents an image of purity and virtue to her subjects, her empire depends on the brutal methods of Chancellor Monfallcon, who maintains order through a network of spies and assassins. The most dangerous of these agents is Captain Quire, whom Monfallcon tasks with seducing the queen. Quire's mission threatens to expose the hypocrisy at the heart of Albion and potentially destroy both Gloriana and her empire. The queen must navigate between her public role as a symbol of enlightenment and her private desires, while dark forces work to undermine everything she has built.
