If You Need Me

Part of Toronto Terror

First published 2024

Dallas has been in love with Wilhelmina Reddi-Grinst since third grade. He calls her Hemi. She calls him a menace, mostly because he once sank her bike to the bottom of a lake. Now he plays pro hockey and she has just taken a PR job with his team, which felt like a second chance. He worked on it carefully, showing up, being better, winning her over one small moment at a time. Then he got drunk and blew it. One bad night created a very public impression that the two of them are a couple, deeply in love. Hemi is not in love. Hemi is furious. But both their jobs are on the line, and their reputations with them. So they agree to sell the lie. Dallas commits fully. He will be the boyfriend she never asked for and never expected, attentive and steady and present. The small-town high school reunion is coming up, and the prom king is finally going home with the valedictorian, even if she still can not stand him. What Dallas wants is for the fake version to become true. What Hemi has not decided yet is whether she wants that too.
