Part of Lucas Davenport, book 17
First published 2007
Two elderly women are found dead in their upscale Minneapolis home, beaten with a pipe. The crime scene suggests a drug addict broke in and grabbed whatever small valuables he could find before fleeing. Lucas Davenport from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension accepts this explanation at first. But something nags at him about the stolen items and the choice of victims. As he digs deeper, Davenport realizes the objects taken might not be so trivial after all. A deliberate pattern starts to surface where others see only random violence. The investigation pulls him toward a confrontation he never anticipated. The people responsible for these deaths know he's coming for them.
