Troy Chance watches a small child fall from a ferry into the frigid waters of Lake Champlain. She dives in immediately and surfaces with a terrified little boy. The ferry vanishes into the distance, leaving Troy to swim nearly a mile to shore while towing her tiny passenger through bone-chilling water. The boy speaks only French and will say just his name: Paul. After that, he stays silent. Troy expects Paul's parents to contact police or reporters, but no one comes forward. Days pass in complete silence. Troy, who works as a freelance writer, becomes equally committed to protecting Paul and discovering what happened to him. She must use all her skills and bravery to keep both of them safe while unraveling the mystery of why a small child was alone on that ferry and why no one seems to be looking for him.
