Mind Prey

by John Sandford

Part of Lucas Davenport, book 7

First published 1996

Rain falls as psychiatrist Andi Manette walks from a parent-teacher conference with her two young daughters. She notices the red van too late. A hand reaches out, a familiar voice calls from the shadows, and the Manette family vanishes. Deputy Chief Lucas Davenport arrives at the scene hours later. He holds a blood-stained shoe while pink stains spread across the wet pavement around him. He knows this case will test him like no other. Davenport launches his investigation with desperate urgency. Meanwhile, Andi Manette fights back from inside an isolated farmhouse where her captor holds them. She recognizes the man who took her family. Her psychiatric training tells her he has weaknesses she can exploit. Both Davenport and Manette race against time as the kidnapper's obsession drives him toward violence. Each must use every skill they possess to save Andi's daughters before it's too late.
