Part of Jack Reacher, book 18
First published 2013
Jack Reacher completes his long trek from South Dakota's winter landscape to reach Virginia. He heads to the stone headquarters of the 110th Military Police near Washington D.C., the unit that once served as his closest approximation of home. Reacher wants to meet Major Susan Turner, the new commanding officer whose phone voice intrigued him. Instead of Turner, he finds a different officer occupying his former desk. Turner has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Reacher's homecoming takes a darker turn when he learns he faces accusations of a homicide committed sixteen years earlier. The military pulls him back into service against his will. Someone tells him he belongs to the army again, that his freedom has ended. The question becomes whether Reacher will regret his decision to return, or whether his enemies will pay the higher price for drawing him back into their world.
