Outsider

by Linda Castillo

Part of Kate Burkholder, book 12

First published 2020

Police Chief Kate Burkholder receives an urgent call from Amish widower Adam Lengacher. He found an unconscious woman in a car trapped in a snowdrift during a sleigh ride with his children. Kate arrives at the farm and recognizes the driver as Gina Colorosa, her best friend from the police academy ten years ago. They graduated together as rookies with the Columbus Division of Police, but their reunion turns dangerous when Kate learns Gina is wanted for killing an undercover officer. Gina insists corrupt officers framed her because she planned to expose their crimes. Kate calls state agent John Tomasetti for help, but even he faces resistance from his superiors who order him to stop investigating. A blizzard traps Kate and Gina at the Lengacher farm while they search for the truth. As Kate digs deeper into what really happened the night her friend allegedly shot a fellow cop, a killer waits in the shadows. Violence erupts, forcing Kate to question everything she believed about friendship and the police force she has served.
