A young girl's body hangs from a tree on the Danish island of Bornholm in the late 1990s. Her bicycle lies crushed beside the road. The hit and run driver vanishes without a trace, and police close the case. Seventeen years later, a local inspector who never forgot the crime reaches out to Carl Mørck of Department V for help with cold cases. Before Mørck can respond, the inspector shoots himself. Rose, Mørck's determined assistant, convinces the unconventional Department V team to travel to Bornholm. The three investigators begin digging into the old case, but their questions about the past threaten to unleash dangerous forces that have stayed buried for nearly two decades. As Mørck and his team uncover new evidence, they discover that solving this cold case may put their own lives at risk.
