George Spuri tastes freedom when a judge releases him and two partners from jail in Piedmont, North Carolina. The judge acted after receiving death threats against his daughter. The three men go their separate ways, but Spuri makes a dark promise to himself. He will earn more illegal money than both former partners combined. Soon after the split, Spuri discovers something troubling about himself. A strange feeling grows inside him that only disappears when he kills someone. He prefers victims he knows personally rather than strangers. The moment of recognition excites him most. He savors the surprise in their eyes, followed by pure terror when he reveals his deadly intentions. Spuri also kills for revenge. When he learns that the detective who originally arrested him and his partners for murder has tracked down and killed both men, Spuri returns to North Carolina. He has one goal in mind.
