Shadow of Freedom

by David Weber

First published 2013

Michelle Henke commands Manticore's Tenth Fleet when a messenger arrives from the Mobius System with disturbing news. The Mobius Liberation Front plans to rebel against President Svein Lombroso's brutal regime, and they believe Manticore will support their uprising. Michelle has never heard of these rebels or any promise of aid. She realizes this is a setup by the shadowy Mesan Alignment to destroy Manticore's reputation as a champion of freedom. When the Royal Manticoran Navy fails to appear, the rebels will be crushed, and no independent system will trust Manticore again. Michelle knows she has no orders to assist liberation movements and limited ships to fight the powerful Solarian League. Her fleet just delivered a humiliating defeat to the Solarian Navy, but thousands of superdreadnoughts will return for revenge. Despite the impossible odds and lack of authorization, Michelle refuses to let patriots die believing in help that will never come.
