Han Solo dreams of piloting his own starship away from Corellia, a gritty industrial world where he scrapes by under the control of Lady Proxima's street gang. When he attempts to flee with his girlfriend Qi'ra, only Han makes it off planet. She remains trapped behind. Desperate to acquire a ship and rescue her, Han joins the Imperial Navy despite his rebellious nature and distaste for authority. The Empire crushes his independence, forcing him into the criminal underworld of smugglers and con artists. There he encounters Lando Calrissian, befriends the Wookiee Chewbacca, and discovers the Millennium Falcon. Han signs on with a crew of pirates for a dangerous heist with terrible odds. The job could give him everything he wants or destroy him completely. This novelization expands the film with alternate script material and additional scenes exploring Han's Imperial service, Qi'ra's hidden past, and early rebel activity.
