Taking Sides

Part of Moonshot Hockey

First published 2026

Conrad Shepard is Moonshot Hockey's starting defenseman and a complete disaster around women. He can barely hold a conversation with one, let alone ask one out. After a rough season-ending loss, he signs up to volunteer at a high school hockey camp, figuring it will be a low-pressure escape. It is not. Coach Whitney Aven runs the camp, knows the game inside and out, and has absolutely no interest in dating hockey players. She grew up surrounded by them. The rule exists for good reason. Conrad is different, though. He blushes when she speaks to him. He is patient and genuinely good with her players. She finds all of it unreasonably attractive. When he somehow works up the nerve to ask her out, she says yes, surprising them both. One clumsy date turns into two, then three. Whitney keeps telling herself the rule still applies. Then she learns the part Conrad left out: he is her brother's biggest rival on the ice. What started as a simple exception to a sensible rule is now something much harder to walk away from.
