Martha Macnamara sits alone in a luxury San Francisco hotel room, waiting for her daughter Elizabeth to make contact. For years, Elizabeth has reached out only through cryptic late night phone calls. Now she has flown Martha across the country and booked her an expensive room, then vanished without explanation. Martha meets Mayland Long, an elegant Chinese gentleman who lives at the hotel. He recognizes her honesty and warmth, and offers to help locate Elizabeth. As they work together, Martha and Mayland grow close quickly. Mayland uses his connections to trace small clues about Elizabeth's whereabouts. Then Martha herself vanishes. Mayland realizes he has fallen in love with her just as he begins to fear she may be dead. He must use all his considerable intellect to find Martha before it becomes too late. His search will require him to take risks he has avoided for centuries.
